Uniform Crew News

This weekend is Quarter Finals!  This is the time to show your PRIDE by being performance-ready.  It is the responsibility of the Uniform Crew to make sure uniforms are in tip-top shape for your child to perform.  Parents/students also have responsibilities for being performance-ready – do you know what they are?

HAIR – must be short or put up so it is contained under their hat.

SOCKS – they must be long and plain white – no stripes or color on the heel – this includes gray heels!

BAND CAMP SHIRT/WHITE SHORTS – clean and ready to go!  Also, your student needs to be WEARING these so that they can put on their uniform in a group setting.

GLOVES – clean and ready to go! (Cleaning instructions:  wash in cold water WITH bleach.  Hang dry.)

SHOES – clean and ready to go!  (Cleaning instructions:  scrub sides of soles with a brush and 409 or scrubbing bubbles.  Clean scuffs off uppers with a magic eraser or fingernail polish remover.  Remove laces and hand wash with dish soap.  White shoe polish makes the shoes beautiful!  Clean shoes the day before needed so they have time to dry.  Spray deodorant or Febreeze sprayed inside keeps the shoes smelling fresh.   MAKE SURE your student’s name is written in BOTH shoes with permanent marker.)

DEODORANT – no explanation needed!

OTHER — NO fingernail polish and NO visible jewelry!

The Uniform Crew will have gloves ($6, $5), extra band camp shirts ($10), extra white shorts ($10) and extra white socks ($1) for sale.  Avoid extra cost by making sure your child has everything they need packed in their red bag.

Packing for the Bowling Green Overnight Trip

The band will stay in a hotel on Friday night and then in a gymnasium on Saturday night. You will need to pack two separate bags for the weekend in addition to your red bag

Friday (hotel) – Small Suitcase or Overnight Bag

Pack everything you need for the hotel that night and practice Saturday morning. This could include toiletries, sleeping attire, Saturday morning practice clothes, and anything you personally carry for your instrument. The overnight bag and your red bag will be the ONLY bags you take off the bus and into the hotel when we arrive. Remember to pack lightly, we will only be at the hotel for a short time. Do not plan on bringing anything for a ‘room party’ on Friday night. Sleep is important to performing your best on Saturday. The ‘party’ will be Saturday night after the championships!

Saturday (gymnasium) Bed-in-a-bag

Pack in a black garbage bag whatever you plan on using for sleeping on the gym floor. This could include sleeping bag, sleeping mat, pillow, blankets, etc. Whatever you need to ‘make your nest’ for the night. This bag will be loaded in a separate location under the charter bus and will not be taken off the bus until we arrive at the gymnasium on Saturday. DO NOT place anything in this bag that you will need Friday night at the hotel or for practice on Saturday.

Important!

·         Make sure your name is clearly labeled on your overnight (Friday) bag.

·         Write your name large and clear on the black garbage back using tape and a sharpie.

Medications for the Bowling Green Overnight Trip

If your child needs to take any prescription medications from time we depart for Bowling Green to the time we return on Sunday you must:

1.       Complete a “Physician Order and Parent/Guardian Authorization Administration Form” found on www.lafayetteband.org  for each medication.

2.       Send only the medication the student will need during the trip in its original container.  Do not send extra.

3.       Drop off the medication(s) at the blue chaperone building on Tuesday (10/27), Wednesday (10/28) or Thursday (10/29) anytime during practice. In order for us to properly organize and log the medications we ask that you not bring any medications last minute on Friday morning.

Why go to all this trouble?

The Chaperone Team will hold the medications and make sure that your student self-medicates at the prescribed times. We carry the student medications with us at all times so if something comes up like the need for an inhaler we have the medication available for the student and can track usage. The situation can become dangerous when we don’t have the medications available for your student when they need it most.

If you have any questions you may contact Trish Sprague (sprague@twc.com) or Mike Booth (mikeboothgm@gmail.com).

KMEA Ticket Distribution

Pre-ordered KMEA semi-final and finals tickets will be distributed as follows in the student parking lot:

·         Thursday, October 22 @ 5:30 – 6:15pm

·         Friday, October 23 @ 5:45 – 6:30pm

·         Wednesday, October 28 @ 4:30 – 5:30pm

Please contact Beth Potter at potterjb5@gmail.com or 859-948-3859 with any questions.

Events in Preparation for KMEA State Finals

Halloween Treat Bags

Several parents are assembling Halloween “goodie” bags to give the students after the State Finals performance.  If you would like to donate candy, Jan Arnold will be collecting on Wednesday, October 21 and Wednesday, October 28 during rehearsal.  Please contact Jan at 859-278-2018 if you have any questions.

Prayer Around the Flag Pole

Bob Soper will lead the annual Prayer Around the Flagpole on Thursday, October 29 at 5:30pm.  Parents and family members are invited to pray out loud or silently for each section, circumstance, and our fellow band families.  We will meet rain, snow, or shine!  We will finish in time to watch the final run at practice.  This activity is not sanctioned by the LBA and is optional.

Encouragement Signs

Let’s show the musicians and performers how much we support them and congratulate them on a wonderful marching season!  Parents, family members, and friends are welcome to make encouragement signs and posters (e.g., “We Believe!” or “Go Lafayette!”) for the band.  We will line the perimeter of the band field during the final run on Thursday, October 29 at 6:00pm.  Please join us for this 2nd annual (and fun) tradition!

Color Guard and Drum Major Pictures

Color Guard, Drum Majors and anyone who missed picture day will have their pictures taken on Monday, November 9th @ 4pm in the Orchestra Room.  Contact:  Brenda Boggs at bsbboggs@yahoo.com

BINGO – Volunteers Needed Now

Bingo is a year round fundraiser and we need your help!  This is a busy time for everyone but the financial success of Bingo depends on parent volunteers. Several pull tab sellers are needed every Tuesday and Thursday – the bingo patrons want to give us their money by purchasing pull tabs!

We ask that each family volunteer 12 times per year at Bingo.  Please find a Tuesday or Thursday this fall and come to the Bingo Hall in Keithshire Shopping Center at 6:00 pm.  You will meet some great parents and support the band’s fundraising efforts.
