BAND MEMBERS — It is very important to check and double-check the items in your Red Bag prior to every performance! Make certain all required items are present, clean. This is important information to remember prior to every football game and competition!

Parents and Students — Carefully review these instructions:

  • Bring money for gloves if needed. $5.00 – $6.00
  • Clean and polish shoes
  • Have your band camp shirt to wear under your uniform.
  • Wear long white socks – plain, no stripes! (It’s good just to keep an extra pair of socks in your bag)
  • Bring the white shorts provided to you.
  • If there is a problem with your uniform, see a member of the uniform team.
  • We always appear in public dressed in full uniform unless Mr. Smith or Mr. Bishop have informed the students otherwise.

Hair should not touch the collar when dressed in uniform, therefore, students with longer hair should bring items to secure their hair in a ponytail or purchase a wig cap.  Wig caps can be purchased from the Uniform Team for $1 for a package of 2 caps.”

Have class – YOU are the “PRIDE OF THE BLUEGRASS”! Always support other performing groups! Refuse to say anything negative, no matter what might be said to you.

Mason High School Marching Band Invitational – October 17th

The next competition for the Lafayette Band will be the Mason High School Marching Band Invitational in Mason, Ohio (near Cincinnati) on October 17.  This will be a one-show competition at an excellent facility and offers an outstanding opportunity to watch a different array of high quality band programs than we usually encounter.

The competition will be held at Atrium Stadium on the campus of Mason Middle School, adjacent to Mason High School.

Two competitions will be held with separate award ceremonies.  The Class A / AA block will occur in early afternoon with awards in late afternoon.  The AAA / AAAA / Open block (which includes Lafayette) will begin shortly thereafter and finish with an exhibition performance of the William Mason Marching Band.

Lafayette Band Competition Etiquette

·         Have good manners!  Recognize and support the efforts of other students, band families and schools!  Remember you are representing the Lafayette “Pride of the Bluegrass” tradition!

·         Don’t talk or enter/exit the stands during performances.

·         Silence cell phones.

·         Choose words wisely when speaking about other bands.

·         Be cautious about comments made on social media outlets (i.e., Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, band blogs, etc.).

·         Always applaud a band’s performance.  Students will appreciate our support and recognition of their efforts.

·         The Lafayette “flag in the stands” tradition continues.  Distribution will occur just before Lafayette performs.  Please do not raise your flag until the band that performs before us has completely exited the field.   After the performance begins, lower your flag so that everyone can see the show. When the performance ends, raise your flag until Lafayette leaves the field.  Please return flags to Carole Howell, including the new ones for TOR, for distribution at the next competition.

·         Please refrain from yelling a specific student’s name when the band is set to perform.  This can be a distraction to your student and others.  They are prepared to deliver an excellent performance and this requires concentration.

·         When photographing or recording a performance, be careful not to block the view of the people seated around you.

Let’s represent Lafayette and ourselves by exhibiting good manners and respect for others.

Medications for the Mason Contest

If your child needs to take prescription or over-the-counter medication on Saturday and we do not have a physician’s signature on file, you need to complete and return the FCPS “Physician Order and Parent/Guardian Authorization Administration Form” found under the Downloadable Forms section of the Lafayette Website (www.lafayetteband.org).

Turn in the completed form along with the medication needed for that day only in its original container to any chaperone at the blue building next to the practice field. We will take medications for the Mason contest on:

Thursday: 5:00-6:15

Friday: 5:00 -6:15 pm

Saturday Drop off

Please note that over-the-counter medications must be accompanied by a physician’s signature on the FCPS form noted above.  If a physician has already signed the LBA Medical Form then you are not required to submit an additional form for OTC medications you initiated on the LBA Form.

If you have any questions you may contact Trish Sprague (sprague@twc.com) or Mike Booth (mikeboothgm@gmail.com).

Uniform Crew News

This weekend is the last regular contest!  This is the time to show your PRIDE by being performance-ready.  It is the responsibility of the Uniform Crew to make sure uniforms are in tip-top shape for your child to perform.  Parents/students also have responsibilities for being performance-ready – do you know what they are?

HAIR – must be short or put up so it is contained under their hat.

SOCKS – they must be long and plain white – no stripes or color on the heel – this includes gray heels!

BAND CAMP SHIRT/WHITE SHORTS – clean and ready to go!  Also, your student needs to be WEARING these so that they can put on their uniform in a group setting.

GLOVES – clean and ready to go! (Cleaning instructions:  wash in cold water WITH bleach.  Hang dry.)

SHOES – clean and ready to go!  (Cleaning instructions:  scrub sides of soles with a brush and 409 or scrubbing bubbles.  Clean scuffs off uppers with a magic eraser or fingernail polish remover.  Remove laces and hand wash with dish soap.  White shoe polish makes the shoes beautiful!  Clean shoes the day before needed so they have time to dry.  Spray deodorant or Febreeze sprayed inside keeps the shoes smelling fresh.   MAKE SURE your student’s name is written in BOTH shoes with permanent marker.)

DEODORANT – no explanation needed!

OTHER — NO fingernail polish and NO visible jewelry!

At the Mason competition, Uniform Crew will have gloves ($6, $5), extra band camp shirts ($10), extra white shorts ($10) and extra white socks ($1) for sale.  Avoid extra cost by making sure your child has everything they need packed in their red bag.

Food and Travel

We plan on serving a box lunch on Saturday and BBQ dinner (veggie burger for vegetarians) at Mason.  We need servers at Mason Heritage Presbyterian Church for dinner that will be served at 5:15. The church gymnasium is located across the street from the school and stadium. Please email Robin Feese at rfeesemd@gmail.com if you can help serve.

Please deliver cookies to Stacey in the student parking lot on Saturday morning.  Due to allergies, no peanuts, nuts, or sesame seeds.
